American Pie

“…she used me! I was used! I was used! Cool!” – Jim (“American Pie” – 1999)

There are hi-jinx galore in this 1999 comedy when four friends, Jim (Jason Biggs), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) and Oz (Chris Klein) make a pact for prom.  But what happens in the meantime when teenaged hormones kick in?  While you’re watching “American Pie” here are a few things to look for.

Party Time!

When Jim first approaches Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) at Stifler’s (Seann William Scott) party, he pretends to be laughing at something the girls said.  Watch the scene behind him closely.  We see a boy in a blue shirt and a girl in a beige tank top walk up to the two girls talking at the fireplace.  It cuts to a side view of Jim, Nadia and her friend and then cuts back to a close-up of Jim.  We can see the boy and girl walk up to the two girls at the fireplace again.

Hold On!

Jim and his dad (Eugene Levy) are sitting on his bed while Jim’s dad hands him different magazines.  Keep a quick eye!  When Jim’s dad hands him the third magazine, the close-up shows Jim’s dad is holding the magazine at the top.  But in the next shot of the two of them on the bed, he’s holding the magazine at the bottom.

Where Did It Go?

Nadia is in Jim’s room and she opens the drawer next to his bed.  When she first opens the drawer we can see a jar of Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly on the left side.  A moment later, the jar has completely vanished.  Where did it go?

Seat Covers

When Finch makes a made dash for the restroom, he reaches up for a seat cover.  The left side view shows that Finch pushes the box sideways through the silver holders that’s mounted on the wall.  (We can actually see the box sticking out of the bottom.)  It cuts to a front view and the box is back in place.  When we see the left side view again, the box is askew once more.

Let’s Play Pool!

Near the end of the movie, Stifler is throwing a party after prom.  Finch walks into the room where Stifler’s mom (Jennifer Coolidge) is.  We see Finch take a yellow pool ball and rolls it across the table.  When Stifler’s mom asks if he’s lost, the front shot of Finch shows the yellow pool ball has stopped in the middle of the table.  It cuts to a shot of Stifler’s mom and then back to Finch.  The yellow pool ball has moved to the left side of the table.
