First Wives Club

“Social climbers on the rise.” – Gunilla Goldberg (“First Wives Club” – 1996)

This 1996 film starred Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton as three friends who are reunited after the death of their friend, Cynthia (Stockard Channing) and vow revenge against their husbands who have left them for younger women.  While you’re watching “First Wives Club” look out for these movie goofs!

How Many Drinks Is That?

After Cynthia’s funeral, Brenda (Midler), Elise (Hawn) and Annie (Keaton) are reminiscing at a restaurant.  There are two things to look out for during the scene. In the side shot when Brenda asks “How are you guys”, you can see the waiter put Elise’s drink on the table.  Annie then says “Just fine” and in the wide shot, you’ll see the waiter place Elise’s drink on the table again.    That’s not all!  Keep your eye on Elise’s drink.  At one point in the scene (when they are talking about plastic surgery) she has the glass in her hand but in the next shot, you’ll see her pick it up again.

Since We’re At The Restaurant…

When the trio sits down at the restaurant, Elise takes her sunglasses off and folds them.  But, in the shot after they order drinks, Elise’s sunglasses are flat on the table with the “stems” over her napkin.  After Elise makes a comment about Annie’s newsletters, the glasses are positioned with the lenses against the table and “stems” sticking straight up.  Later in the scene, they are folded again.

It’s A Shopping Spree!

Brenda and Duarto (Bronson Pinchot) see Morty (Dan Hedaya) and Shelly (Sarah Jessica Parker) shopping.  When Morty and Brenda are talking he gives her a blazer that is still on the rack.  The front shot shows Brenda holding the garment with her right hand.  The side shot, however, shows she is holding it with both hands.

When Brenda put the blazer back, the front is facing out.  Watch closely when Morty walks away.  You’ll see that the blazer is now turned and the back is facing the camera.

Is The Door Opened Or Closed?

Brenda, Elise and Annie plan to take business records out of the penthouse Morty shares with Shelly.  Duardo is able to get Morty and Shelly out of the penthouse but the two come back sooner than expected.  When Gunilla (Maggie Smith) calls Duardo to warn them, Duardo runs into the upstairs office.  Watch closely!  When he runs into the office, the door in the background shuts behind him.  However, in the following shot, you’ll see that the door is open again.

Hand Over The Plate!

You’ll need a quick eye to see this one!  Shelly is having a “social luncheon” with Gunilla.  When Gunilla tells one of the servants to “get the fork”, the servant reaches out with her left arm.  But, in the next shot, you’ll notice that it’s now the servant’s right arm that is holding out the plate to get the fork.
