Anyone who enjoys Monty Python or British humor had to love “A Fish Called Wanda”. This 1988 movie was co-written by John Cleese who also played Archie Leach, the unwitting barrister who finds himself caught in the middle of Wanda Gershwitz’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) scheme to double and triple cross her partners in crime. An exceptional performance is given by Kevin Kline who won a Supporting Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of the dimwitted Otto. Just don’t call him stupid! Sit back, prepare to laugh and look for these movie mistakes.

Let’s Reflect on the Situation

Wanda, George and Otto are in Ken’s apartment planning the heist. When Ken gets ready to leave, he stops at the fish tank. Keep a close eye on the reflection in the mirror behind Otto. When he moves to leave, it appears the overhead microphone moves in sync with him.

The Vanishing Vehicle

After George’s first court hearing, he slips a note to Ken (Michael Palin). When Ken walks down the sidewalk he’s taunted by Otto. Watch the background behind Ken during this scene. A vehicle parked on the side of the road can be seen in some shots but mysteriously disappears in others.

When Dogs Attack

Ken’s first attempt to eliminate Mrs. Coady (the late Patricia Hayes) finds him in the back of a van with a Doberman. He gets the dog to smell an undergarment in order to get Mrs. Coady’s scent. When the Doberman jumps out the back of the van, the dog has the undergarment on his back. We see the undergarment fall off when the dog hits the street. But, in a wide shot, after the dog has run off, there is no undergarment to be seen.

I Guess It’s Handy

When Archie and Wanda first meet at the flat, they start dancing around the room. Keep a close eye on the pair when they’re talking right afterwards. Wanda’s hands change position several times throughout the scene. First they’re around his neck, then on his shoulders and back again.

John Cleese’s character in the film is named Archie Leach. This is the real name of which legendary actor? The answer? Cary Grant!
