The Haunted Mansion

“Next time you’re gonna think twice before coming back from the dead, ain’t ya?” – Jim Evers (“The Haunted Mansion” – 2003)

Jim Evers (Eddie Murphy) is an overly anxious real estate agent.  When he has the opportunity to sell an unusual mansion owned by Master Gracey (Nathaniel Parker), he unwittingly puts his life and the lives of his wife, Sara (Marsha Thomason), and children, Megan (Aree Davis) and Michael (Marc John Jefferies) in danger.  Will the family survive the “Haunted Mansion”?  While you’re watching this flick, here are a few things to look for.

Can He Really Tell Time?

At the beginning, Jim misses a dinner date with Sara on their anniversary.  Jim tries to make it up to her by giving her a teddy bear and an expensive watch.  Look carefully!  The teddy bear has the watch on its left “paw”.  Jim takes the watch off and puts it on Sara.  But, in the side shot, when Jim shuts the front door, we can see the watch is back in its original position, on the bear!

Dried Out!

The family arrives at Gracey’s mansion when it suddenly starts to storm.  We can see the rain on the shoulders of Jim’s suit when they’re waiting to go inside and even when they go in.  But when they walk into the dining room, his shoulders are completely dry!

Don’t Toss The Cookies!

Ezra (Wallace Shawn) is talking to Megan and Michael in the attic when Emma (Dina Spybey) arrives with a tray of cookies.  Emma is holding the tray but when she says “It is their concern.  They’re involved.”, the far shot shows the tray is suddenly gone.  We next see the tray of cookies when Ramsley (Terence Stamp) picks them up off the stand a few moments later.

A Bit Torched!

Jim has to go inside the mausoleum to retrieve the key.  There are two statues holding torches on either side of the door.  Jim grabs the torch from the statue that’s standing to his right.  Later, Jim and Megan are trying to escape from the mausoleum.  We see an outside shot of Michael as the spiders start to crawl across the door and the torch is back in the statue’s hands.  When Jim and Megan finally escape, the torch is once again missing.

Heads Up!

Beware!  Spoilers Beyond This Point!

After Gracey discovers the truth about Elizabeth and Ramsley has been vanquished, Sara suddenly collapses.  Jim is holding her.  The close-up shot shows her head slump towards her left shoulder, away from Jim.  But the next overhead shot shows her head facing upwards and towards Jim.
