Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
“...Now is the time that we must choose between what is right and what is easy.” – Professor Dumbledore (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” – 2005)
It’s dangerous times for Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) as he begins his fourth year at Hogwarts. Not only does he have a recurring nightmare about Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), but someone has entered him into the life threatening Triwizard Tournament. Who’s behind all of this? Will Harry be able to complete the three tasks? While you’re watching “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, here are a few things to look for.
Tea Anyone?
At the beginning of the movie, the caretaker/Frank Bryce (Eric Sykes) is in his kitchen. When we first see the silver tea kettle, there is a brown tea kettle top sitting next to the stove (to the left). But in the following front shot of Frank, he’s holding the brown tea kettle, and the top is already on it!
Where Are They Sitting?
The Hogwarts students are sitting at the tables before the Durmstrang and Beauxbatons students arrive. Harry is sitting on one side of the table with Ron (Rupert Grint) to his left. Seamus (Devon Murray) is sitting to the left of Ron. Across the table is Hermione (Emma Watson). Sitting next to her (on her left) is Ginny (Bonnie Wright). Padma and Parvati Patil (Afshan Azad and Shefali Chowdhury) are sitting to Ginny’s left. Most of them are sitting in the same place throughout the scene. But when Mad-Eye Moody (Brendan Gleeson) shows up, Seamus is sitting next to Hermione. A few moments later, after Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) reveals the tournament’s age limit, there is a close-up of Ginny. The Patil sisters are now sitting on her right.
Maybe It’s A Fashion Statement
Watch the silver beads on Dumbledore’s beard in two scenes. The two beads change position in Dumbledore’s beard between the time he introduces Barty Crouch (Roger Lloyd-Pack) and when he calls for “Silence” regarding the Triwizard Tournament. Later, when Dumbledore is looking into the Pensieve (after Harry has been chosen as a champion), the beads change position again. They change from being close together to further apart between the shots of Dumbledore when Professor McGonagall (Maggie Smith) says “since when do you accommodate the ministry” and the following front view of him.
The Writing’s On The…
Blackboard! Watch how the writing differs on the board when Moody introduces himself in the students’ first Defense Against the Dark Arts class. When Moody first rights his name there is a line that connects the “M” and the “O” in his name. Later in the seen, the writing is slightly different and the two letters are no longer connected.
Point That Thing Someplace Else!
Mad-Eye Moody turns Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) into a ferret when he tries to cast a spell on Harry. Keep a close eye on Moody’s walking stick during the scene after McGonagall appears. At first the walking stick is set pointing straight up. When Moody starts to chase Malfoy, we see the stick move to the left. A few moments later, when Moody yells “I can tell you stories about your father…”, the walking stick is back in its original position.
Since We’re Talking About Writing…
Harry, Ron and Hermione are sitting at one of the tables in the Great Hall during class. Fred and George (James and Oliver Phelps) are sitting at the other side of the table. Watch closely when the twins throw the note to Ron. When Ron first picks up the paper, we can see the note has four lines and is written near the top of the page. But, in the close-up view of the paper, when Ron is reading it, the note now has three lines and is written towards the middle of the page.
Let’s See That Again!
Harry falls into the Pensieve and lands beside Dumbledore. Watch the seats behind Harry closely. During a close-up of Harry when he is first sitting on the bench, we see a woman in a gray dress sit behind him. A few seconds later, during a front shot of him and Dumbledore, we see the person sit behind him again.
Hand It Over!
Snape (Alan Rickman) is talking to Harry after his conversation with Karkaroff (Predraq Bjelac). Keep an eye on the bottle of Veritaserum that Snape shows Harry. At first (in a front shot), Snape’s is holding the bottle near the middle. In the following side shot, Snape is holding the bottle near the top. He’s holding the bottle near the middle again in the next front shot.
Where Is He Standing?
The third challenge is about to begin. In a close-up shot, we can see Karkaroff behind Viktor Krum (Stanislav Ianevski). Karkaroff’s hands are on Viktor’s shoulders. But in the following overhead shot, he’s not touching Viktor and is actually further away from him.
Dead Men Tell No Tales
**SPOILER ALERT**
Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson) and Harry arrive in the graveyard. Watch Cedric after Wormtail (Timothy Spall) has used the Avada Kedavra spell on him. When Cedric lands on the ground, his face is looking straight up. When Voldemort rises, Cedric’s head is tilted towards the left. It’s still pointed towards the left when Voldemort asks for his wand. Cedric’s head is back in its original position when Voldemort is first talking to the Death Eaters.
