Independence Day

“If I would have known I was going to meet the President of the United States I would’ve worn a tie.  Look at me, I look like a schlemiel!” – Julius Levinson (“Independence Day” – 1996)

Humanity is about to be exterminated when aliens arrive, bent on annihilation.  Will pilot Steve Hiller (Will Smith) along with President Thomas Whitmore (Bill Pullman) and computer genius David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) be able to lead the resistance?  While you’re watching “Independence Day”, here are a few things to look for.

Flag Waving

At the beginning of the movie, as the space craft approaches, we can see a glimpse of the American Flag, upright on the moon.  But, according to Buzz Aldrin who was one of the astronauts on the Apollo 11 mission that placed the flag there, he saw it fall over during their take off from the moon.

TV Time!

We first see Miguel (James Duval) and Troy (Giuseppe Andrews) in the camper.  Troy is next to the television.  Watch his left arm closely during the scene.  His left arm is away from the TV in the close-up of him but in the next farther shot of him and Miguel, Troy is holding the top of the TV with his left hand.  His arm is down again when it switches back to the close-up shot.

It’s An Open & Shut Case!

David and Julius (Judd Hirsch) are waiting in the White House while Constance (Margaret Colin) goes to get President Whitmore.  When the President walks into the room, David is standing and holding his laptop.  The laptop is closed at first but in the next shot of David, it’s partially opened and we see him close it again.

Where Did They Go?

At Area 51, we see David open the refrigerator when he’s looking for ice and there are a number of noticeable items on the shelves on the door (especially the top and second shelves).  A few moments later, when Constance puts the bottle in the fridge, the shelves are noticeably empty!

Speaking Of Bottles…

David and Constance are arguing in the kitchen.  When Constance mentions “being part of something special”, David slams the bottle down on the nearby counter.  The top of the bottle is on the counter.  A few moments later, when Constance is leaving, the top is back on the bottle and David starts to take it off!

The Final Countdown

**Beware: Spoilers Ahead**

Steven and David are stuck in the alien space craft.  They fire the missile which sets a 30 second timer for the two to fly to safety.  However, if you count down the amount of time that it takes them to fly out of the main spaceship, it takes them quite a bit longer than the 30 seconds.  (It takes them over twice as long to get out!)
