Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Ring
”It is in men that we must place our hope.” – Gandalf (“Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” – 2001)
J.R.R. Tolkein’s story of a hobbit, Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), who inherits a ring initially forged by the evil Sauron (Sala Baker) and partakes in a quest to destroy it with the help of his companions: Gandalf (Ian McKellan), Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Samwise “Sam” Gamgee (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monaghan), Pippin (Billy Boyd), Boromir (Sean Bean), Legolas Greenleaf (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), finally came to the big screen under Peter Jackson’s direction in 2001. Although you’ll have to watch this awesome adventure along with “The Two Towers” and “Return of the King” to see if Frodo and his friends are victorious, here are a few “oops” to look out for on your journey!
Hat’s Off!
At the beginning, when Elendil (Peter McKenzie) is hit by Sauron, he is thrown against the rocks. When he hits the ground, his helmet is bent but is still on his head. In the very next shot, when Isildur (Harry Sinclair) comes to his father’s side, the helmet is now off of his head and sits to his left.
Keep It on the Wagon!
When Gandalf first appears, there is a shot from behind that shows a scarf hanging from the right side of the wagon. Watch when the wagon is shown from the front. The scarf is now on the left side of the wagon. Also keep an eye on the pipe that Gandalf is smoking. At one point he is smoking the pipe. But, in the next shot the pipe is gone and he is holding the reins of the wagon in his hand. The shot after that shows the pipe is back again.
I Know He’s a Wizard, but…
Keep an eye on Gandalf during the party for Bilbo (Ian Holm)! His hat appears and disappears between shots. This can especially be seen when he grabs some fireworks from the back of the wagon (before Merry and Pippin swipe a few). Gandalf’s hat is missing in the shot, however, when he sets the fireworks off, his hat is back on.
Hobbits – There and Back Again!
When Frodo, Sam, Pippin and Merry arrive in Bree, they go to the Prancing Pony to find Gandalf. Pippin, Sam and Frodo are sitting at the table when Merry returns with his pint and sits down. When Pippin notices this, he goes to the bar to get his own pint. Watch closely during the overhead shot of the scene after they first notice Strider a.k.a. Aragorn staring at them. It still shows Frodo, Sam and Pippin sitting at the table.
Caution: There’s a Film Crew in the Wild!
As the group leaves Bree, Aragorn tells them they’re going “in the wild”. He then walks forward and you can see his bow hit and move the camera slightly.
It’s All Swordplay
The Ringwraiths chase Arwen (Liv Tyler) to the Ford of Bruinen and they draw their swords with their left hands. Throughout the scene you’ll notice that the sword changes from their left hands, to right hands and back to their left hands. Arwen is also holding her sword in the air. When the water roars through, sweeping the Ringwraiths away, a back/side shot shows her sword is down. However, in the next front shot, she still has her sword lifted.
More Swordplay
When Lurtz (Lawrence Makoane) begins to battle Aragorn at the battle of Amon Hen, Aragorn drops his sword upon impact with a tree. Lurtz then throws a shield at Aragorn which pins him to the tree. When the shield hits, you’ll see Aragorn drop his sword again.
It’s All in the Hands
After Boromir has been shot by Lurtz, Aragorn is kneeling over him. Watch the scene closely and you’ll see the shots alternate between Boromir’s right hand gripping Aragorn’s left shoulder (when the shot is behind) and his hand being down (when the shot is in front).
