Mission : Impossible

“There was never any physical evidence I had anything to do with that, that…that wonderful piece of work.” – Luther Stickell (“Mission: Impossible” – 1996)

What happens when one of the top covert operative teams is slaughtered with only one survivor?  When Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) finds himself in this situation, he’s determined to find out who is responsible while clearing his name in the process.  While you’re watching “Mission: Impossible” (1996), here are a few things to look for.

Elbows Off The Table

Jack (Emilio Estevez) and Ethan joke about Jim Phelps’ (Jon Voight) old age during the meeting in Prague.  A front and side view of Jack shows his arms are folded on the table.  But when Jim starts to talk, it switches to a front view of Jack and Ethan.  Jack’s left arm is still in the same position but his right arm is down, with only his right hand on the table.

Where’s The Fire?

Ethan, along with Claire (Emmanuelle Beart), Franz Krieger (Jean Reno) and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), has infiltrated the CIA Headquarters at Langley.  When the guard first sees Section 21 lit, we can see that the area map shows this to be a corner section.  But, a few scenes later when Kittridge (Henry Czerny) is in a meeting and notices the fire alarm, different sections are blinking but none are the corner section previously shown.

Don’t Drink That!

Claire spikes Donloe’s (Rolf Saxon) coffee cup when she’s sitting next to him.  Look quickly! During this shot the trademark/emblem on the cup appears to be “Witten”.  However, towards the end of the scene, and especially noticeable when Claire leaves, the symbol/trademark on the coffee cup now starts with a “P”.

Who Is He E-mailing?

Watch two scenes closely for this one!  When Ethan first e-mails Max (Vanessa Redgrave), he sends the e-mail to Job 3:14. But, after they have broken into Langley and stolen the Noc list, when Ethan sends the e-mail, he sends it to Job 3:15.

Did You Know…

Senator John Waltzer (played by Tom Cruise) is first shown on TV as being a Democratic politician from Virginia.  Did you know there have been no senators from the state by this name?
